A lot of things can cause a woman to lose her hair, but there are a few things you don’t have to worry about. Basically, you won’t lose your hair by caring for it too much. No amount of teasing, coloring, or shampooing will make your hair get thin or fall out. You can’t pick the wrong styling product and lose all your hair. Hair loss happens when the biological process of hair growth gets interrupted. It happens naturally, for a variety of reasons, and there are natural ways to fight it.

Female Pattern Baldness

Women can have pattern baldness for the same genetic reasons as men. It’s just not quite as common. In female pattern baldness, the hormone DHT adheres to hair follicles, cuts off the flow of nutrition to the hair, and causes miniaturization that leads to hair loss.

Hormone Problems or Vitamin Deficiencies

Hair growth requires proper nutrition for the hair follicles. If you don’t get proper nutrition, or if you have a condition that prevents delivery of vitamins to the hair, you can experience thinning or hair loss. Menopause, iron deficiencies, and a lack of vitamin B are examples of this type of hair loss.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s natural defenses attack the hair follicles. Alopecia Areata causes patchy hair loss in different areas of the scalp. Hair can grow back and shed unpredictably over the course of a woman’s lifetime. When Alopecia Areata causes complete and permanent hair loss in the scalp, the condition is called Alopecia Totalis. The most rare and advanced form of Alopecia Areata – Alopecia Universalis – causes complete hair loss over the entire body.

Stress, Anxiety & Trauma

Any shock to your system can upset the delicate balance in your body. A traumatic event, either physical or emotional, can cause you to lose a little bit of hair or all of it at once. Our consultants understand that hair loss can make a difficult time even harder. They have the training and resources to help minimize the pain associated with hair loss.

Medical Hair Loss

One type of hair loss that can’t be avoided is the kind that’s associated with medical treatment. We know that chemotherapy, radiation, and drugs for everything from Diabetes to Lupus cause hair loss as a side effect. If you have one of these treatments on the horizon, you can plan ahead and manage the whole process. At Images of Princeton, we work with women all the time as they work through the fear and emotion that accompanies medical hair loss.
