Summertime, Pools & Chlorine

Chlorine is a chemical disinfectant added to pools to keep us safe from harmful bacteria and viruses. However, the benefit doesn’t come without a downside...

Minimal exposure to chlorine will not damage your hair, however, it will leave it feeling dry and perhaps a bit on the frizzy side. Daily and frequent exposure to chlorine is a different story.

Our scalp naturally produces oils, which provides our hair with natural shine and elasticity. The role of chlorine is to remove bacteria, oils, and dirt. So when hair and chlorine come in contact with each other for longer periods of time, the results ends with damaged hair.

Anyone exposing their hair to chlorine is at risk. The good thing is that there are ways to prevent chlorine damage:

  1. Use a swim cap (not too sexy) but it’s worth the sacrifice...
  2. Rinse your hair with clean water before entering the pool. It will help reduce rapid absorption of chlorine.
  3. After your swim, immediately rinse your hair thoroughly. This will start to remove the chlorine immediately.
  4. To stop any damage, remove the chlorine from your hair as soon as possible by shampooing and conditioning with a good quality product. There are chlorine removing and clarifying shampoos on the market for everyday swimmers that are ideal.

At Images of Princeton we offer two services that will help prevent and/or correct any damage associated with overexposure to chlorine:

  • Laser Hair Therapy will stimulate the blood flow to the hair follicles and scalp to help regenerate hair growth and improve the condition of your hair;
  • Hair Loss Prevention includes products that will prevent and correct any damages associated with overexposure to chlorine.

Both of the services, used together, aide in achieving a healthy scalp and luxurious hair.
